The number of men in counseling is increasing due to a societal shift – – mental health matters!

It’s not uncommon, though, for some men to be uncomfortable with the thought of talking to a stranger about, well, anything. The point of therapy is to help you feel more comfortable with who you are. And a big part of that is knowing who you are inside. When you learn to express what’s really going on inside, you can help strengthen the relationships you have with those you love.

Why are Men Hesitant to Seek Counseling?

Many men today were raised to be “tough”. They were told from a young age that boys don’t cry. They learned to “fight through the pain” and never complain. “Real men,” they were told, provide for their family and don’t ask for help.

Unfortunately, emotional struggles don’t go away because you’re strong, tough, or provide for your family.

Emotional problems compound in time. When you were once “strong” and “stoic”, now you’re short-tempered and depressed. Why? Because you learned to isolate yourself and withdraw emotionally. When, in fact, what you really needed, was help.

Talking to a friend helps. Talking to your spouse/partner helps. Counseling for men helps.

Is Counseling for Me?

The goal of therapy is to help you process what’s going on inside of you. Counseling helps you see what was already there. Therapy allows you to access a part of yourself that has been blocked out for a myriad of reasons.

If you fear you’re letting your family down, or if stress from work or finances is weighing you down, therapy can help.

If you feel as though you’re losing control of your life, if you’re angry more often than not, or if you’ve been withdrawn or depressed, therapy can help.

We need an outlet for the barrage of bullets that comes at us day after day. Therapy can be that outlet.

Men in therapy learn to regulate and process their emotions so they can be more present in their lives and in the lives of their loved ones.

You don’t have to just wade through life. You can actually enjoy it, too.
