Why Forgiveness In A Relationship Is Important

Why Forgiveness In a Relationship in important Washington, PA Therapists

Forgiveness can be a very difficult concept for many of us. However, forgiving others is important for our own mental health and wellbeing. Forgiveness in a relationship is important as allowing old hurts to grow can lead to resentment and hate. Forgiveness in any relationship is important for our own peace of mind.

What is Forgiveness in a Relationship

Forgiveness is acknowledging that someone has hurt you and accepting that you want to move on from that pain. Forgiveness happens inside of us, not them. When we hold on to resentment, we are giving power to the person who hurt us.

Forgiveness in a relationship helps us to move forward without reliving the past hurt. Forgiveness is crucial for a healthy, sustainable relationship.

When we decide to forgive, we let go of the hurtful event without the need for revenge. We don’t hold on to the grudge and we don’t use the event as ammunition for future arguments. Forgiveness allows you to move past your pain, even if your relationship ends as a result.

Forgiving is Not Excusing

Forgiveness is not condoning the behavior. When you are able to forgive, you aren’t saying “It’s okay”. Forgiveness is for you.

Forgiveness helps us move past the hurt to find peace. It helps us let go of our pain so we can heal and hopefully, move on. Forgiveness helps us to find peace and calm within us. It helps to bring in positive emotions instead of reliving the negative, angry emotions of reliving the hurt over and over again.

When we hold on to grudges, we are being controlled by the negativity of past circumstances. Past mistakes can’t be changed. When we forgive, we are allowing ourselves to let go of the hurt and finding our inner strength to move forward in healthier, more positive ways.
